Don't End Sentences with Prepositions

Today’s Writing Tip: Eliminating Dangling Prepositions

Sentence: Analyzing the data revealed interesting perspectives towards the managers that participants worked FOR.

Edited Substance: Analyzing the data revealed interesting perspectives towards the manager FOR WHICH the participants worked.

Explanation: In the English language, writers are cautioned against ending their sentences with a preposition. In the sample sentence above, the sentence ends with the preposition “for.” The word “for” functions as a preposition and conjunction, but it is used as a preposition in the sentence above. Therefore, the edited sentence is rearranged so that the sentence ends in a verb.

Scholars should become familiar with prepositions. When editing, revise all sentences that end with a preposition.
