Academic Writing Workshops
& Coaching Services

At Cultivate the Writer, we provide services that facilitate scholarly writing proficiency, academic productivity, dissertation completion and academic career advancement.

Many faculty members and graduate students struggle to write amid their professional and personal responsibilities, yet writing is central to their success. They lack the time, energy, focus and motivation to write well or consistently, so the isolating task of academic writing becomes more cumbersome than it should be. However, writing is a skill that can be mastered, and scholarly writing difficulties can be overcome with the proper support.

Our services are designed to address the difficulties surrounding academic writing so those within higher education can thrive as productive scholars. The common writing barriers include:

  • Isolation

  • Time Constraints

  • Inconsistent Writing Practices

  • Procrastination

  • Lack of Scholarly Writing Preparation

  • Red Ink Trauma

  • Perfectionism

  • Lost Momentum and Motivation

  • Overreliance on AI

  • Lack of Scholarly Mentorship

  • Competing, Urgent Priorities

  • Decreased Confidence in Writing Abilities

  • Imposter Syndrome

Whether you’re an institution wanting to service your scholars or an individual faculty member or graduate student ready to be more productive, we would love to work with you to achieve your goals.

Academic Services For Universities and Organizations

We partner with universities, including graduate schools, departments and colleges, as well as organizations, including educational funds, professional/student organizations and fellowship programs, who want to host:

1. Academic Workshops & Webinars

Our engaging sessions present difficult to grasp, scholarly concepts in an understandable manner so that participants can begin to apply them immediately to see results in their work as scholars, researchers and academic writers.

 2. Dissertation Boot Camps & Academic Productivity Intensives

Though intense, our dissertation boot camps and academic productivity intensives focus on building lasting skills, practices and strategies in a supportive community where participants realize their struggles aren’t unique. In a focused community of scholars, participants re-engage with their research, re-connect with their authentic voice and re-gain the momentum needed to complete their dissertations, writing projects and other academic goals. Beyond writing instruction, participants receive and apply strategies for effective time management, academic productivity, goal setting and work-life balance.

While dissertation boot camps are comprised of doctoral candidates committed to completing their dissertations, our academic productivity intensives are non-dissertation focused. They bring like-minded scholars together to achieve scholarly writing goals.

Both services can be conducted in person, virtually or in a hybrid format. They can be designed in an all-day, several half-day or other multi-day formats.

3. Customized Educational Program Consulting

We excel in designing and delivering personalized solutions for unique disciplinary, departmental or organizational needs. If you have problems you can’t seem to solve or lack the time or expertise in-house to execute your vision, we would love to partner with you.

Academic Services for Graduate Students and Faculty

Individually, we support graduate students and faculty members directly with the following services:

1. Academic Editing

With the introduction of generative artificial intelligence (AI), preserving your unique voice is more important than ever. While many universities and organizations continue to develop clear policies for the transparent use of AI in academic writing, they still accept and often encourage the use of an experienced human editor.

We offer three levels of editing designed to clarify your ideas, ensure your writing is structured well, remove redundancy and polish your language. We can help you identify and improve problematic areas. As academic editors, our goal is to educate you on important scholarly writing conventions and grammar mechanics.

2. Writing Coaching

We realize that academic writing is a distinct genre of writing that most people are not trained to do. In fact, at most universities, training in scholarly writing stops at the undergraduate level with Composition I and II. Most advanced graduate students and faculty have not had a graduate level academic writing course. Yet, the expectations and rewards for writing well drastically increase the more educated you become.

Writing coaching removes the mystery from producing strong academic writing. More importantly, you get to work on whatever documents, challenges or tasks you’re facing to get the personalized guidance and instruction needed to become a skilled, confident scholarly writer.

3. Dissertation Coaching

The startling ABD, or All But Dissertation, rate remains around 50%. That’s right, year after year, approximately half of those who start a doctoral program have not and likely will not complete the final stage: writing a dissertation. They have completed all of their coursework and passed their comprehensive/qualifying exams. However, they get stuck in the dissertation stage with its myriad risks: writing and non-writing.

Our insightful, expert dissertation coaches help doctoral candidates either avoid or successfully navigate these risks. Through guidance, accountability, writing support and strategic project management principles, we come alongside you to see you through to dissertation completion.
