Three Types of Academic Editing for Graduate Students & Faculty

Line Editing

Popularly known as proofreading, line editing focuses on language mechanics. Line editing is ideal for late stage documents that are ready to be submitted since it polishes writing. The following aspects of the English language are improved during a line edit:

  • Grammar

  • Punctuation

  • Sentence structure

  • Sentence construction (passive/active voice)

  • Sentence variety

Combination Editing

The third type of editing combines content editing with line editing at the same time. Combination editing is for documents that have been revised extensively or are at a late stage of development.

How Academic Editing Works

To begin the editing process, please email your document to info@cultivatethewriter.com and note the type of editing you would like as well as the requested timeframe. Within 48 hours, your document will be reviewed, and you will be provided the cost to complete the editing.

Our editing rates are per page and based on the writing style. When you submit the document, please ensure it is double spaced, with 12-point font and one-inch margins; also, the document layout should be set for a letter (i.e., 8.5 x 11).

Editing rates

Line editing = $7 - $9 per 8.5 x 11 page
Content editing = $10 - $12 per 8.5 x 11 page
Combination editing =  $13 - $15 per 8.5 x 11 page

The typical timeframe to complete a document is one week for up to 25 pages. Book manuscripts and dissertations between 100 - 150 pages usually take four to six weeks. However, we can accommodate urgent deadlines for a rush fee.

Once payment is made, editing will begin. If you’re paying through institutional funds, the vendor onboarding process needs to be started for editing to begin.

Once editing is completed, you will be emailed two versions of the document: one with the edits visible via Track Changes for your review, and the other version with the edits accepted. Additionally, with each level of editing, you can request a 30-minute review call/video session with your editor to discuss the edits or any questions. Please email your request for an editing review within 72 hours of receiving your edited document.

Also, you can schedule a consultation to discuss any questions, special considerations or to clarify your needs or timeframe before the editing process begins.

Content Editing

The second type of editing is commonly known as revision. Content editing, or revising, addresses the clarity, flow and organization of ideas presented in a document. In addition to deleting or rearranging writing, a content edit includes comments for the author to address. In content editing, the focus is on how well ideas are expressed, so it is ideal for documents that need to be strengthened. The following aspects of writing are improved during a content edit:

  • Central argument, claim, position, research question(s), hypothesis and/or subpoints

  • Strength of the support and development of key points in the document

  • Conciseness

  • Sufficient explanation of ideas

  • Clarity, order and flow of ideas

  • Word choice

Special Project Editing & Document Formatting

Customized project editing rates can be established for lengthy documents, multiple documents or documents requiring multiple content revisions.

Formatting for electronic thesis/dissertation (ETD) and journal article submission is priced separately as well as the formatting and/or editing of most employment materials (CVs, cover letters, personal statements, teaching philosophies).

Email info@cultivatethewriter.com for details or to schedule a consultation to discuss any special editing needs and timeframe.
