Individual Dissertation Coaching Services For Doctoral Students
Tired of Being “ABD” (All But Dissertation)?
Writing a dissertation/thesis can feel like climbing an insurmountable mountain for many doctoral candidates. Disconnected from the structure of the classroom with no assignments or syllabus as academic guides, you’re tasked with independently completing and writing up a research study.
Most candidates work on their dissertation research in a silo; some connect with their dissertation chair or advisor regularly; others sporadically. Beyond these meetings, you can feel trapped in a cycle of reading, researching, writing, revising and repeating…all by yourself! At times, the task at hand overwhelms you.
If you’re a doctoral candidate who can relate, know the challenges you’re facing aren’t unique to you. Dissertation struggles are well documented, especially if you’re dealing with the following:
-
Lack of writing productivity
-
Isolation
-
Lack of focus and motivation
-
Time constraints
-
No, little or conflicting faculty guidance
-
Competing priorities
-
Ineffective, absentee or unclear committee feedback
-
Academic burnout
-
Higher education politics and bureaucracy
With the proper support, information, structure and resources, you can move from ABD (“All But Dissertation”) to earning your doctoral degree.

The Statistics
It's true: becoming a proficient scholarly writer is challenging for many graduate students and early career faculty. In fact, approximately 50% of doctoral students who start a doctoral program (PhD, EdD, DBA, DNP, etc.) don’t finish and remain ABD (All But Dissertation). The Chronicle of Higher Education, the Council of Graduate Schools and the National Science Foundation publish detailed reports on the low percentage of people who complete their doctorate each year.
Underdeveloped writing, speaking and critical thinking abilities should never be the reason a graduate student doesn’t finish their program or a faculty member doesn't advance professionally. Research-based writing is an academic skill, so those willing to work can receive the proper instruction, techniques and guidance to grow as research-based writers, scholars and experts.
At Cultivate the Writer (CTW), we are dedicated to removing barriers to your scholarly success. We have a comprehensive program of campus-based workshops/webinars, editing services, writing coaching and dissertation coaching to facilitate educational and career advancement. We welcome the opportunity to partner with you or your university/organization to cultivate the writer, scholar and expert within!
